Fall is just around the corner. Here where we live you can feel it in morning air and see the subtle changes starting. The tree leaves are starting to fade to a more muted shade of green and there are tiny hints of yellow and red that will soon become a beautiful vision of fall. The Autumn is a special time of year, one of preparing for the winter to come, cozying up with a warm drink at the end of a shorter day and getting to wear all the sweaters!!. I love all of the seasons and believe they all have wonderful things to offer, but Fall is hands down my favourite! The days are getting shorter and there is starting to be a crisper feeling in the air that just calls one to wrap up in a warm sweater. It comes with such a cozy feeling. There are so many things to do in the fall that I wanted to share just a few of the ones I love the most.
1. Go for a walk outdoors.

Walking can obviously be done any time of year, however walking in the fall is especially enjoyable! Going for a stroll and really noticing the changes in the colour of the trees, and even the flowers that are still growing on the edges of the road. Fall still has beautiful sunny days, usually without the extreme heat and humidity that can accompany the summer months making a more pleasant overall experience!
2. Can and preserve food from the garden.

Now some people may call this work, however I think it’s great fun! I spent the day last week making dilled carrots and it is so satisfying to see the beautiful glass jars full of delicious food we get to enjoy throughout the winter months. The fall is when I usually dry the herbs from my herb garden as well. Whether hanging the bunches to dry or using my dehydrator (here is a newer version of the one I use https://amzn.to/3x04H38). Knowing I’m going to have them to flavour dishes long after the cold has stopped them from growing outside makes me feel pleasantly pro active!
3. Eat seasonal foods.

The fall has so many delicious things to eat! I love eating squash picked from my garden or heading to a local farm market and picking up fresh corn or even pumpkins to make a delicious pie with. In my opinion food just tastes better when you eat it locally grown and in season!
4. Have a bonfire.

The fall is the perfect time to sit around a bonfire and appreciate all of the wonderful things in life. I know that a lot of people think of summer when they think of bonfires, but to me this is an experience best enjoyed in the fall! The summer has too much heat and too many mosquitoes for me to appreciate this properly! The earlier darkness that comes with fall lets me do this without having to stay up super late, so extra bonus!
5. Cozy up your living environment. Heavier throw blankets, fall scented candles and even pinecones gathered from outside with some little gourds in a bowl can make a cozy living space for when the weather gets chillier.
6. Learn an indoor hobby. This will look different for everyone depending what interests they have, but finding something you enjoy doing that will help you while away the time as the weather grows colder can make such a positive transition. Things like knitting, embroidery, crocheting, scrapbooking or writing can make days spent indoors something to look forward to!
7. Sit and watch the sun go down.

I absolutely love putting on a cozy sweater, getting a steaming hot drink and reading outside as the sun starts to sink below the horizon. It is the perfect time to relax, think back over your day and give gratitude. I especially love this if my day had gotten a bit busier or more hectic than I would have liked. It is the perfect wind down before settling in for the night.
There are so many lovely things that the fall has to offer, and I hope these ideas help you to stop, notice and appreciate the ever changing and beautiful time of year we are in!
With love, Elizabeth
